Overview: It is on this trail going up Brush Heap that you will encounter one of the longest and steepest, yet ride able climbs. The downhill on the other side of this long climb makes it worth the effort. There are numerous creek crossings and some very scenic spots that can only be found in the back woods of this area. The trail is pretty much like most trails in the Ouachita's so expect plenty of rocks and roots. Some portions of the trail have a nice smooth flow to them, while other sections may put you on the ground if you are not careful. The terrain here is really varied, when you are down near the rivers the terrain is really rocky and flat, as you get away from the rivers the terrain gets a little smoother with bigger climbs and downhills.

Recommended Route: Either direction would be okay to ride. You can start on the north side where there are two trail heads, one at Forest Road 815 just south of Country Road 36, and another on Forest Road 25. There are two trail heads to the south, one on Forest Road 106 and the other on Forest Road 53800.

Rating: There are really no bail outs and the only way back is to turn around, the terrain can be steep, rocky and technical and for these reasons I would rate this trail for the expert, intermediate and the advanced beginner. Do not attempt this trail unless you have some good endurance and good handling skills. This is a very remote and rugged area, if you get hurt or lost it could be some time before anyone comes to your aide.

Arkansas Trail Rules

Ride Open Trails: Respect trail and road closures — ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail.

Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. Don't cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in.

Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits.

Yield Appropriately: Riders yeild to foot and horse traffic. Riders traveling downhill should yeild to ones headed uphill, unless signed for oneway or downhill traffic only.

Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you.

Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding and prepare accordingly. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.
